The Marion Cultural & Civic Center and Vets in the Arts brought the World Premiere of Standard Issue, an original musical with book, music, and lyrics written by Hank and Deanna Deiters. Inspired by Hank's military service, Standard Issue tells the story of Charles Vanderwall as he navigates service, relationships, and deployment during his first tour of duty in the Army.

All audiences were riveted to the story and music of Standard Issue, but this musical was written specifically with the Veteran in mind.  Military service and musical theater have been united in a reimagining of the medium and the impact it can have on an audience.

SYNOPSIS:

Set in a modern-era, three-year Army tour of duty, Charles Vanderwall, an avid note-taker, finds himself unexpectedly enlisting in the Army to fulfill the conditions of his late father’s will. Boot camp introduces him to a cast of colorful characters, providing plenty of material for his writing, yet he remains convinced that he’s better off alone in the real world. As boot camp and deployment push him beyond his physical limits, Vanderwall faces an even greater challenge, choosing to risk heartbreak for the chance at true friendship and connection. Standard Issue is a story of service, brotherhood, and the power of choice in the face of circumstances beyond your control.
